CURRENT SCENARIO

Entrepreneurship has been regarded as one of the important determinants of industrial growth both in the developed and in the under-developed countries. SMEs constitute one of the major driving forces of economic growth in the developing countries. Self-employment and the creation of new employment through SMEs help to reduce disguised unemployment and under-employment in numerous sectors. In a poor country like Bangladesh, poverty alleviation through economic growth, as well as employment generation on mass scale is heavily dependent on the development and expansion of SMEs. With increased family income for the poor, the income disparity in the society would reduce to certain extent. Rising rural income prevents migration of the rural poor to urban centers in search of jobs and reduces further burden on the already strained urban infrastructure. The micro-entrepreneurs and their families are able to explore utilization of the local resources in rural areas. As a result they help in creating a market for local products in villages and towns with new income and products.

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is a well known term in most developed countries of the world today, but is still an evolving issue in Bangladesh, where challenges of overpopulation, unemployment and illiteracy weigh heavy. There is a perception that CSR practices are more of a cost or a threat, rather than as a potential business opportunity. In addition, there is a lack of business cases for CSR in Bangladesh, through which the private sector can learn and adapt to integrate CSR with their core business strategy.

In early 2001, the issues regarding CSR started to emerge in Bangladesh, especially by those sectors which were export-oriented such as the ready-made garments (RMG) sector. With the recent trend in globalization and the rise in market dominance in Asia, compliance to strict environmental regulations is necessary to improve competitiveness.

In Bangladesh, large and small companies can enhance their competitiveness through greater adoption and implementation of CSR. By embracing the values of CSR, the Bangladesh private sector can send a strong signal to the global market that they are ensuring their commitments to society.
